In agriculture and horticulture, seedlings are often damaged by wind, rain and sun, or bitten by animals — the survival rate drops and the same ground has to be replanted, which doubles the cost of both plants and labour. Corrugated plastic tree guards — also called tree shelters, tree tubes or tree protectors — exist to stop that loss.
A guard is made from PP corrugated sheet, a twin-wall polypropylene board that is lightweight, waterproof and recyclable. It wraps around the whip as a physical barrier against weather and browsing animals, while the hollow wall cushions temperature swings and keeps the bark dry. Because polypropylene is an environmentally friendly material that can be recycled at end of life, it has become the standard choice on farms, vineyards and reforestation projects.
We make several shapes of plastic tree guard. Tell us the shape you use and we will quote the most competitive price and arrange a free sample within 24 hours.

Lightweight The hollow PP structure carries almost no weight, so a crew carries hundreds at a time. |
Foldable Ships flat and folds on site — cuts warehouse space and freight on every container. |
Reusable Pull it off, stack it flat and use it again on the next planting cycle. |
Strong & Durable Twin-wall structure takes knocks and harsh weather without splitting. |
|
UV-Stabilised Resists sun, frost and rain — will not go brittle or chalky in the field. |
Ventilated Vent holes and open tops keep air moving, so no damp build-up on the bark. |
Recyclable Polypropylene is recyclable at end of life — no treated waste to dispose of. |
Cost-Effective Replanting costs more than guarding — one guard replaces several lost seedlings. |
Taller is not automatically better. A seedling needs light, respiration and air exchange with its surroundings — over-shade it and you invite disease. The right height is the one that covers the threat you actually have, and no more.
| Stage / site | Height | What it has to stop |
| Just planted — ground diameter under 3 cm, knee-high whip | 450 mm | Rabbits, mice and small rodents. Sits 40–50 cm above the root collar; upper branches keep full light and airflow. Carries shrubs and slow species through their first one or two years. |
| Grown to half a person’s height — bigger wind area | 600 mm | Dogs, sheep and deer feeding at 40–50 cm. Also cuts wind sway — at this height a strong wind rocks the trunk hard enough to snap it. |
| Coastal windbreak — sea wind and salt spray | 900 mm | Salt-laden wind dries the trunk out. A 900 mm shelter acts as a windbreak coat: wind speed drops, humidity holds, survival rate rises. |
| Large wildlife on site — sika, roe deer, elk | 900 mm with 3–4 mm board |
Feeding height reaches 70–80 cm, so the whole trunk must be covered — and 2 mm board is too light for it. |

| Thickness | Holds up against | Typical projects |
| 2 mm | Rabbits, mice, herbicide drift, one season of weather | Nursery rows, seasonal plantings, lowest cost |
| 3 mm | Sheep, dogs, common white-tailed deer; the standard for most schemes | Farm and orchard planting, general forestry |
| 4 mm | Large deer and elk, exposed and windy sites, multi-season use | Wildlife areas, upland and coastal sites |
| 5 mm | Years of exposure, and reuse across more than one planting | Long-term windbreak, municipal and estate planting |
Four steps, no tools. A guard that is only pushed into the soil will be uprooted by the first real wind — and can then crush the seedling it was meant to save. The stake is not optional.
|
1. Open and wrap Unfold the sleeve along the scored lines and wrap it around the seedling, leaving room for the trunk to swell. |
2. Seat the base Push the bottom of the guard a little way into the soil so it stands upright on its own. |
3. Slide the stake Pass a matching wooden stake or bamboo cane through the slot we pre-punch at the base of the guard. |
4. Drive it home Knock the stake into the ground. The whole assembly now resists wind instead of tipping over. |
There is no fixed date — you take it off when the seedling tells you. Two signals to watch for, and one rule that has no exceptions.
|
The trunk has outgrown it When the trunk grows thicker than the inside of the tube and looks cramped, the guard has done its job — leave it and it will girdle the tree. |
The canopy is out of the top Once branches and leaves emerge above the shelter and get full light, the seedling no longer needs the walls. |
Remove it completely Do not leave a split ring on the tree. Take the guard off the site — it folds flat for storage and the next planting. |
|
Vineyards & Vine Grafts Drop-on vine protectors shield young grafts from herbicide drift, wind and rabbits, and lift the survival rate of every replant. |
Forestry & Reforestation Thousands of seedlings per site — flat-packed guards keep freight down and let a small crew plant a large area. |
Coastal Windbreak 900 mm guards with 3–4 mm board hold humidity around the trunk where salt spray would otherwise dry it out. |
|
Orchard & Farm Planting Protects fruit and nut whips from livestock and wildlife through the years before the trunk hardens. |
Municipal & Landscaping Round guards stay presentable for years on streets, parks and estate plantings — no rust, no sharp edges. |
Nursery & Garden Centre Vented guards for young vegetable and garden plants — keeps rabbits, spring storms and spray off the crop. |

| Cost | Board is cheap; folds flat so freight stays low | Material and freight both higher; bulky to ship |
| Installation | Fold, wrap, one stake — no tools | Needs cutting, tying and fixing; slower per tree |
| Protection | Solid wall also blocks spray drift, wind and sun scorch | Stops browsing only; wind and spray pass straight through |
| Corrosion | Will not rust or rot | Rusts; sharp ends can injure handlers and stock |
| After use | Removable, stackable, reusable next cycle | Often left in place; hard to remove cleanly |

Shandong Flutepak Industry Co., Ltd. runs a 50,000 m² plant with 16 fully automatic PP hollow board extrusion lines and an annual capacity of 30,000 tonnes. Everything from raw material extrusion through die-cutting, perforating and slot punching is done in-house, so colour, thickness and strength stay consistent from the first guard to the last — which is what matters when you are placing a repeat order or running a large-scale planting project.
Every batch is checked for colour, thickness and strength before it leaves. Because there is no middleman between our extruder and your container, you get factory-direct pricing on the same quality — and no trading company margin added on top.

What size should I choose for my plants? |
|
450, 600 and 900 mm are the three heights most planting schemes use. Pick by threat, not by habit: 450 mm covers rabbits and mice on a newly planted whip, 600 mm covers sheep, dogs and deer feeding at 40–50 cm, and 900 mm covers large wildlife and coastal salt wind. We also cut to any height you specify. |
|
Do plastic tree shelters protect against deer? |
|
Yes, if the height matches the animal. For ordinary white-tailed deer, our 450 and 600 mm shelters keep them off the trunk. Where large deer or elk range, feeding height reaches 70–80 cm — there you need a 900 mm guard, and we recommend 3 mm or 4 mm board so the wall does not collapse under the pressure. |
|
How do I install a plastic tree guard? |
|
Open the sleeve and wrap it around the seedling, push the base slightly into the soil so it stands upright, then slide a wooden stake or bamboo cane through the slot we pre-punch at the bottom and drive it into the ground. That stake is what keeps the whole guard from being uprooted in strong wind. |
|
When should I remove the tree tube? |
|
There is no fixed date — go by the tree. Take it off when the trunk has grown thicker than the tube and looks cramped, or when the canopy has emerged above the top and is getting full light. Remove it completely: a split ring left on the trunk will girdle the tree. For seasonal crops, pull guards a few weeks before the first frost. |
|
How long do corrugated plastic tree guards last? |
|
Our UV-stabilised board is rated for 6–12 months of continuous outdoor exposure on the standard package. If your project needs a guard to stand two or three seasons, tell us — we quote a heavier UV package with 3 mm or thicker board to match your climate. We will not promise a service life the material cannot deliver. |
|
Can you supply bulk quantities with a discount? |
|
Yes. As the manufacturer we quote factory-direct, and volume pricing applies from the first container. Send the height, thickness, shape and quantity and we will price the whole run. |
|
What does the customisation process look like? |
|
Sample preparation → you place the order and pay a deposit → we produce the guards → quality inspection → assembly → packing → balance payment → shipment. A sample of a standard size ships in 3 days; a custom shape or print takes 5–7 days. |
|
Plastic tree guard or wire mesh guard — which is better? |
|
For general agriculture, forestry, vineyards and household planting, the plastic guard wins: cheaper, faster to install, folds flat for shipping, will not rust, and it also blocks spray drift and wind rather than just browsing. Wire mesh only earns its keep on sites under long-term pressure from very large wildlife. |
|
Send us the height, thickness, shape, colour and quantity — plus what the guard has to stop. We will recommend the grade that matches your site and send a free sample before you commit. |
